# Find and maintain contact details

> Search the directory and distinguish categories, tags, case roles, and affiliations.

Open **Library → Contacts**, or use [Contacts](https://attorney.dearlegal.com/dashboard/contacts). The directory contains people and organizations your team works with, including clients and other case participants.

## Search before creating another contact

Search by a distinctive part of the name. Review **Practice**, **State**, and other filters, and inspect additional result pages when needed. If a long search returns nothing, try a shorter name and check the filters.

The current Practice choices include **Personal Injury** and **NSA**. The PI directory also includes general non-NSA contacts, including contacts used in family-law matters; it does not mean every listed person has an auto-accident case.

Use **Customize Columns** to choose the information displayed. The table includes Name, Category, Practice, Providers, Case Roles, Phone Number, Email, Fax, City, and State. Several column headers also expose sort and filter controls.

## Open and edit a contact

1. Select the correct contact row.
2. In **Edit Contact**, review **Details**.
3. Confirm the identity and contact information before changing a value.
4. Complete required fields identified by the form, then select **Save**.
5. Reopen the contact to verify the intended changes. Use **Cancel** when only inspecting it.

The person form includes Honorific, First name, Last name, Category, Tags, Phone, Email, Fax, Street Address, City, State, Zip Code, and Affiliation. First name and Category show required indicators. Follow the actual form's validation when saving an existing contact with incomplete information.

## Call a contact

When Teams calling is enabled for your account, use the calling buttons beside a contact's **Phone Number**:

* **Call in Teams** opens the Teams app and a call-note draft in Presolve. Choose the case and review the contact's role before saving the draft.
* **Call in browser** opens the Presolve dialer with the contact and number. Under **Caller, case and role**, review or choose a case, correct any suggested details, then choose your calling line and place the call.

A contact may be involved in several cases or share a phone number with other people. Prefilled details are suggestions you can change for the call. Those changes do not edit the contact's directory entry or their roles on other cases.

Follow the [Teams-app tutorial](/docs/help/records/teams-app-calling#call-a-directory-contact-or-another-number) or [browser-calling tutorial](/docs/help/records/teams-browser-calling#call-a-contact-or-another-number). To call a number outside the directory, use the **New call** phone icon in the top navigation bar.

## Distinguish the different labels

| Label | Purpose |
| - | - |
| Category | Classifies the contact in the directory. |
| Tags | Adds contact labels; the editor accepts Enter or a comma to add a tag. |
| Case Roles | Describes how the contact relates to a case, such as Client or Witness. |
| Affiliation | Identifies the primary organization or contact this contact belongs to. |

Contact tags are separate from [case tags](/docs/help/matters/tags) and [document tags](/docs/help/documents/tags). A case-contact role is also separate from staff permissions.

## Add a contact to a matter

Where your matter includes **Associated Parties**, use **Add Contact Role**. Choose the case role first, then search for an eligible contact or use the creation option. Review the identity and relationship notes before linking the contact.

Selecting a contact for a case relationship and editing that contact's directory information are separate operations. Check both the contact and matter when correcting a mismatch.

## Review contact documents

Open the editor's **Documents** tab. Select or enter a **Document type** before choosing files; **Choose from Library** is disabled until a type is supplied.

<Frame caption="Choose a document type before opening the Library picker.">
<img src="https://mintcdn.com/grand-charter/zQHBSF8DN2vYm8-f/images/help/contact-documents.jpg?fit=max&auto=format&n=zQHBSF8DN2vYm8-f&q=85&s=e3d8ebec82bac9c2034e82618e0de467" alt="Contact Documents tab showing no attachments and a disabled Choose from Library button until a document type is entered." width="1108" height="962" data-path="images/help/contact-documents.jpg" />
</Frame>

The Library picker supports folders, search, new folders, and upload. Check the selected file and document type, and verify the attachment appears on the contact after completing the flow. A document existing elsewhere in Presolve does not by itself mean it is attached to this contact.

The editor also offers **Archive**. Treat that as a separate action from correcting or saving contact details and follow your firm's process before using it.
